This is my  first attempt to create a blog.  I want to use this form to help educate my patients about dentistry.  I ask all my patients this question.
    Do you have bad teeth?  Or, do you have bad habbits?
What I'm trying to teach them is they are not hopeless.   We just need to teach them new habits.   If my patients understand this one concept, they will never have another dental problem:  What Causes Cavites and Gum Disease?   Answer:  It's not sugar, it's not failing to brush, it's bacteria (germs).  If your are sick and go to the doctor, he gives you medicine (usuallly to treat an infection)  If you go to the dentist, he's going to cut, pull or drill something.  But what caused the dental problem?  The same thing that caused the medical problem--Bacteria!
Why can't the dentist just treat the infection that caused the cavity?  Actually, we can with antimicrobial therapy but most dentists haven't shifted their thinking along this path.  There is a new therapy called Ozone infusion therapy that is done in europe.  You treat the infection-cavity, not drill it.   Not yet popular in this country.  There is a dentist in Wisconcin (Dr. Chris Kamen) that is the authority on this.  I have been meaning to go see him.  I know that if i start ozone therapy i will get a lot of backlash from the dental community but the patients will love me for it.   I need to stop being scared of what others think and do what's best for my patients.
